Brussels connects

Vrouwenlente gives women a voice

In March 2021, the 5th edition of the Women’s spring festival (Vrouwenlente) took place digitally, and was on the theme of intimacy. Vrouwenlente takes place annually in Brussels around 8 March, International Women’s Day. The festival seeks to give women a voice and organizes activities such as workshops, debates, concerts, dance and films. ‘Speak Up’ is the overarching theme.

Brussels women themselves give shape to the festival.

Since we put the festival together with the women, the themes discussed are very relatable and are closely aligned with their lived experience.

It provides some breathing space for creative work”, according to Katrien Reist, coordinator of iMAL (interactive Media Art Laboratory). “By sharing a studio space, you get cross-fertilization, artists respond to each other’s work and take care of each other.”

Staycation brings people together

“Via Staycation, we wanted to show that fun for young and old can be combined with less traffic. So we took over the streets for a few days to hold play afternoons for the little kids, a homemade bench was available for neighbourly chats, movie screenings, etc. This gave people who were spending the holidays at home a feeling of being on holiday. Despite the showers, people enjoyed it."
